On off-grid sites, diesel generators often run around the clock even when demand is low, burning fuel at inefficient load levels and accumulating service hours. Mobile battery storage changes that pattern. MPMC’s HBD-R Series is designed as a generator partner: it parallels with the genset, stores energy, covers peaks and quiet periods, and keeps the engine working at efficient output whenever it runs. These four operating strategies show how off-grid operators cut runtime, fuel and maintenance.
Strategy 1: Charge and Cycle for Light Loads
Night-time and weekend loads on many sites are a small fraction of the generator’s rating. With HBD-R, the generator runs at an efficient output to charge the battery, then switches off while the battery supplies the light load. At a UK construction site, a 56 kW generator served night loads of 3-6 kW; adding a 30 kW / 60 kWh HBD-R unit extended refuelling from every 2 days to every 7 days and maintenance from every 10 days to every 60 days.
Strategy 2: Silent Hours on Battery Power
Where noise rules restrict generator operation, the battery carries the site alone. At another UK construction site, where local noise rules reserved 17:00 to 07:00 and all of Sunday for generator-free operation, six HBD-30-60 units supplied overnight and Sunday power in silence. HVAC-cooled smaller models and LCAC liquid-cooled larger models run quietly while the genset is off.

Strategy 3: Peak Absorption for Right-Sized Generators
Generators sized for occasional peaks spend most of their time at low load. With HBD-R absorbing peaks and motor-start surges, the generator can run continuously at its optimal load point of around 75%, and diesel engines are kept above the 30% minimum load factor recommended for long-term operation. MPMC product data associates this pairing with fuel savings of up to 75% compared with running the generator alone.
Strategy 4: Selective Shutdown and Solar Charging
On multi-generator sites, HBD-R acts as a Genset Mate, enabling selective generator shutdown during low-demand periods while handling transient loads. Adding SPK mobile solar arrays lets daytime solar recharge the battery, displacing still more generator hours on sunny sites.
Table 1. HBD-R operating strategies and results
Strategy
How it works
Typical result
Charge and cycle
Genset charges battery, then switches off for light loads
Refuelling every 7 days instead of 2 (UK case)
Silent hours
Battery supplies the site alone during restricted hours
Overnight and Sunday operation (UK case)
Peak absorption
Battery covers peaks and motor starts; genset at about 75% load
Up to 75% fuel saving (product data)
Selective shutdown
Battery handles transients while gensets are stood down
Fewer engines running at low demand
Solar charging
SPK arrays recharge the battery by day
More hours with the genset off
The HBD-R Range for Off-Grid Sites
HBD-R units range from 30 kW / 61.44 kWh to 610 kW / 610.6 kWh, are scalable in parallel, and use LFP cells rated for 6,000 cycles at 90% depth of discharge. Their specialised rental structure offers up to 50% lower O&M cost, they are CE certified, and they parallel with generators through DSE, ComAp, DEIF, Woodward, Smartgen, CAT EMCP and Cummins PCC controllers.
Built for Rental and Generator Set Pairing
Units are designed for repeated transport and site work, so rental companies and site operators can move them between projects as needs change. In hybrid systems, MPMC’s SCADA provides remote monitoring and proactive maintenance alerts, helping teams plan fuel deliveries and service visits around actual runtime.
